Hinge load calculator

Reviewed June 2026 · independent, spec-first guidance

Estimate your door's weight from its size and material, then see how many hinges it needs and what to check on the load rating.

Heavier and taller doors need more hinges load per hinge drops as you add them.

Estimated door weight

These tools give general guidance based on common industry rules of thumb. Always confirm load ratings and sizing against the hinge manufacturer's specifications and your local building code before buying or installing.

How the estimate works

Weight is estimated from door area and a typical weight-per-square-foot for the construction type (hollow-core is light; solid hardwood and glass are heavy). The tool then applies the standard height-based hinge count and checks whether the per-hinge share calls for ball-bearing hinges. For anything load-critical, confirm the actual door weight and the hinge's published load rating.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the weight estimate?

It's a reasonable ballpark from typical material densities. Actual weight varies with thickness, glass, and hardware — weigh the door for critical jobs.

What load rating do I need per hinge?

As a guide, the combined rating of all hinges should comfortably exceed the door weight, with margin. Heavy doors should use ball-bearing hinges rated for the load.
